Protect your family throughout this Thanksgiving holiday.
As families gather to celebrate Thanksgiving, it’s important to be extra diligent when cooking, lighting candles, and hosting. Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks and spend time with family. To help you keep your family safe and avoid disaster this holiday, read on.
- Install smoke alarms. You’ll want a smoke alarm in or near the kitchen, on each level of the home, and near sleeping areas. Test these alarms regularly and refresh the batteries, if necessary.
- Remove anything near the stove that could catch fire, including wooden utensils, oven mitts, plastic bags, and towels.
- Stay in the kitchen when you’re cooking on the stovetops and don’t leave the house if the oven is on.
- Avoid cooking if you’re tired. If you’re drowsy, you may not be alert enough to spot trouble.
- Make sure sleeves and your clothing are out of the way when cooking.
- Keep children and pets out of the kitchen when cooking.
- Place candles out of reach of children.
- Tidy up toys left over by the children or pets. Keep walkways free from obstacles.
- Blow out candles before leaving the house or going to bed.
- Be prepared in case of a fire. Remember to turn off the stove, cover the fire with a lid if possible, and use a fire extinguisher. Do not use salt, flour, or water.
