Tips for a Safe Fourth of July Weekend
This Fourth of July may be unlike any that we have experienced before. Perhaps you’re going to spend the weekend out of town or with close friends and family at home. Whatever you are doing for this year’s Fourth of July, it’s important that you remember the key ways to stay safe over the holiday. Besides, there’s nothing patriotic about suffering from injuries and having to go to the emergency room while everyone else is celebrating.   Fireworks Safety It’s always best to leave fireworks to the professionals. If you are going to be setting off fireworks yourself, we encourage you to be aware of what is legal in your state, only purchase and use what is legally allowed, and closely follow all state guidelines. When setting off small, legal fireworks, please:
  • Follow the directions on all fireworks.
  • Never throw fireworks at someone.
  • Only light fireworks outdoors on a smooth, flat surface, away from all flammable materials.
  • Spectators should remain a safe distance from the fireworks being lit.
  • Dispose of all firework materials by soaking them in water before putting them in the trash.
  • Never leave fireworks on the street or in your yard for animals to eat and injure themselves.
Pet Precautions Most animals are incredibly scared of fireworks. Pets that feel scared may react by running away from home, destroying property, and generally not being themselves. Protect your pets this holiday by taking some basic precautions.
  • Do not take your pets to firework displays.
  • Don’t leave your pets in a car by themselves.
  • Don’t leave your pets unattended outside.
  • If your house isn’t soundproof, stay with your pets and keep a TV or radio on so your pets won’t hear the fireworks. Set this up ahead of time so that the noise drowns out the sound of the fireworks.
  • Consult your vet ahead of the holiday if your pet has a tendency to be especially spooked by loud noises.
