Enjoy the festive season safely by avoiding common holiday hazards.
While you may think the most dangerous thing the festive season can bring is an empty bank account, the holiday season offers challenges that you don’t encounter during the rest of the year. Adverse winter weather aside, there are fire risks and party safety that you should be aware of. Check out how to prevent common holiday hazards this year.
Get a fresh tree.
Dry, dead trees are a fire hazard, so avoid selecting a tree that looks brown or dehydrated. Buy a fresh tree and stand it in a bucket of clean water for 24 hours before bringing it into the home to ensure that it is well hydrated. Be sure to water it daily, too! Stand the tree away from heat sources, such as radiators and fires.
Deck the halls safely.
Before you string up all the festive lights, ensure that they are all in good working order and that there are no frayed or damaged wires. Take care not to overload sockets or extension cords, too. While candles are a popular holiday tradition, the flames can be dangerous. Place candles well out of the way of the tree, children, and pets.
Bring on the parties.
The holidays are the perfect time to get together with friends and family in their homes or yours. If the party is at your house, ensure that decorations are not in the way of guests and that there is enough space in your home to fit your guest list! Offer non-alcoholic beverages as well as alcoholic beverages, and make sure each group has a designated driver or calls a taxi at the end of the night.
