Safeguard the gifts you received underneath the tree.
Did you receive some generous and wonderful gifts under the tree over the holidays? If so, you will need to consider updating your home inventory so that these new items are protected under your home insurance policy. If you don’t, you may find that your new gifts are not covered if a disaster or theft occurs.
Homeowners insurance may not cover your presents. Homeowners insurance is designed to cover the items in your home – including your gifts – in the event of fire or theft. However, every policy has its limits. If your present is of high-value, your policy may only cover a portion of it. What’s more, if your present is lost to something that is not covered in your home insurance policy, you may be left with no way to replace it. Make sure you understand what is and is not covered in your policy.
Get your presents appraised. If something were to happen to your high-value gift, you will want to be able to replace it as quickly and as easily as possible. Getting your item appraised can help to lock in the value of it, meaning you can adequately cover it with home insurance. That way, if the worst does happen, you know you have protection in place.
Be wary of theft. Just because the holidays are over and the decorations are packed away, doesn’t mean that thieves have stopped lurking for easy objects to steal. Make sure you keep your valuables out of sight from the street and keep your doors locked at all times.
Make sure your new and wonderful gifts are kept safe throughout the New Year and beyond!
