Add these tasks to your spring cleaning list to protect your wallet and home.
Spring is here and that can only mean one thing for homeowners – cleaning! Spring cleaning is a great way to wipe away the cobwebs from winter and breathe life back into your property. But while you’re changing out the heavy, dark linens for light, airy ones, you may want to add these tasks to your to do list. In addition to keeping your home in good condition, these tasks can help prevent costly insurance claims!
Clean the dryer lint hose. Check and clean the dryer hose at least once a year to remove the lint that gets past the lint trap. Having a clogged hose means that your dryer has to work harder and use more energy, but it is a large fire hazard, too.
Change the batteries on all detectors. While batteries can last a long time, you don’t want these alarms failing when you need them the most. Check that the batteries are in good condition and replace if necessary.
Examine windows and doors. Inspect caulking and seams around the windows and doors to look for cracks where moisture can enter and cause damage. If caulk looks old or is dried out, replace it.
Replace HVAC filters. While this should be done once a year, spring is a great time to maintain your filters while taking care of other housekeeping tasks. Having a clean filter can help you save money and prolong the life of your blower motor.
Clean out gutters and downspouts. Gutters and downspouts direct water away from the roof and the house. If they become clogged with dirt and debris, then the water may seep inside the foundation. To prevent damage, clean out the gutters and downspouts in the good weather.
Repair the driveway and sidewalks. Do any of your outdoor areas have broken bricks or cracked walkways? Fix these now to prevent any accidents on your property.
Avoid those costly repairs to your home by protecting your property.
