Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips for Your Little Monsters

Before fright night, find out how to protect your trick-or-treaters.

Halloween is a fun night for people of all ages. It is a night for children to dress up, collect free candy, and have fun! On this night, it's easy to forget about common dangers and risks that your child may face, but, as a parent, you mustn't do. Here are some tips to keep your little ones safe this Halloween!

Stick to the Familiar

If you can, stay in your neighborhood to trick-or-treat. You and your children will likely know the streets, houses, children, and residents. You know, only visit houses with their lights on and stick to the streets.

Wear Comfy Shoes

Make sure that you and your children are in comfortable, well-fitting shoes. Girls in dresses should avoid wearing shoes with heels, and laces should be double-knotted to avoid tripping in the dark and on uneven sidewalks.

Make Sure Costumes Are Short

Long costumes that drag on the ground are a trip waiting to happen. After purchasing your child's costume, ensure it's an appropriate length and hem anything too long to avoid tripping.

Check Your Child's Sweets

Sort through your child's candy bucket at the end of the night and throw away any sweets that are not in their original wrapping or that look like they may have been opened.

Fill Up First

Before heading out, feed your children a healthy and satisfying supper. This way, your trick-or-treaters won't be tempted to fill up on sweets and chocolate throughout the night.

Let There Be Light

Make it a rule to only trick-or-treat in well-lit areas. Additionally, ensure that your children carry flashlights or have reflective material on their candy bags and costumes.

Drive with Care

Watch out for fast-moving monsters! If you're out in your car, keep your eyes open for excitable trick-or-treaters. Stick to the speed limit in any residential area. Be aware that children may dart out in front of you and may not be using the designated crosswalks.
