How Your Company Can Prevent Repetitive Motion Injuries

If your employees are dropping like flies, take action for incident prevention!

Workplace incidents are unplanned, undesired events that hinder completion of a task and may cause injury or other damage! Note that incidents are preventable! If your employees frequently suffer from repetitive stress injuries, it’s time to make a change. Repetitive stress injuries comprise more than one hundred different types of job-induced injuries and illnesses resulting from wear and tear on the body. It is defined as “a potentially debilitating condition resulting from overusing the hands to perform repetitive tasks, such as typing, clicking a mouse, or writing.” Here are some top tips to prevent injury and reduce the likelihood of repetitive strains!
  • Get set up with an ergonomic workstation – Your computer should be at eye level, your chair should have lumbar support, your wrists should rest on the keyboard straight, and feet should be firmly on the floor.
  • Check your posture – There’s no point using an ergonomic workstation if you slouch. Keep your back straight and your shoulders back!
  • Check your typing position – Your arms should be comfortably by your side and your hands should float above the keyboard at ease.
  • Take regular breaks – At least once every hour, get up from your chair and have a brief walk. Stretch your limbs and relax your eyes. This will help you to be more productive as well as benefitting your health!
  • Exercising regularly! – Stronger muscles are less likely to break down.
  • Relax – If you’re tense at your workstation, your muscles can breakdown and wear more easily. For example, tensing your shoulders for 8 hours a day for 5 days a week is going to leave you with one stiff neck over the weekend! If you feel tense, take a break.
  • Revert to ‘real life’ – Instead of sending an email, pick up the phone or walk to that person’s desk. Getting up from your desk can bring about a healthy change as well as social interaction!
