There may be gaps in your insurance coverage – Tompkins Insurance can help ensure you are properly covered.
Through their apps, Uber and Lyft connect people who need rides with drivers ready to provide them. Founded in 2009, Uber is the best known of these “transportation network companies” (TNCs) that have become so popular with riders and drivers alike.
Do you know that driving for Uber or Lyft may affect your personal auto insurance coverage? Most auto insurance policies cover traditional forms of ride sharing, such as car pools. However, they do not provide coverage when the driver transports people and property for a fee. Those who drive for TNCs are doing so for income. Therefore, while you are driving for Uber, Lyft or another TNC, your auto insurance probably does not apply.
The major TNCs provide some insurance coverage for their drivers. However, this coverage may have “gaps,” leaving you unprotected at points during a driving assignment. Fortunately, some insurers can fill in the gaps between your own coverage and the TNCs. Tompkins Insurance now represents one of the only insurers in New York State offering this type of coverage.
If you live in New York State and drive for a TNC like Uber or Lyft, or if you are thinking about doing so, please contact your trusted Tompkins Insurance advisor so that we may review your options with you. We want to help you make an informed decision about your insurance coverage.
