10 Ways to Keep Your Family Safe This Thanksgiving

Protect your family throughout this Thanksgiving holiday.

As families gather to celebrate Thanksgiving, it’s important to be extra diligent when cooking, lighting candles, and hosting. Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks and spend time with family. To help you keep your family safe and avoid disaster this holiday, read on.
  1. Install smoke alarms. You’ll want a smoke alarm in or near the kitchen, on each level of the home, and near sleeping areas. Test these alarms regularly and refresh the batteries, if necessary.

  1. Remove anything near the stove that could catch fire, including wooden utensils, oven mitts, plastic bags, and towels.

  1. Stay in the kitchen when you’re cooking on the stovetops and don’t leave the house if the oven is on.

  1. Avoid cooking if you’re tired. If you’re drowsy, you may not be alert enough to spot trouble.

  1. Make sure sleeves and your clothing are out of the way when cooking.

  1. Keep children and pets out of the kitchen when cooking.

  1. Place candles out of reach of children.

  1. Tidy up toys left over by the children or pets. Keep walkways free from obstacles.

  1. Blow out candles before leaving the house or going to bed.

  1. Be prepared in case of a fire. Remember to turn off the stove, cover the fire with a lid if possible, and use a fire extinguisher. Do not use salt, flour, or water.
