NEW BERLIN, NY (June 30, 2016) – On Wednesday, June 29, 2016, Preferred Mutual Insurance Company and Tompkins Insurance Agencies hosted a child car seat inspection event at Tompkins Insurance Agencies office in Greece, N.Y.  Members of the community were invited to have their child’s car seat inspected by a certified Child Passenger Safety (CPS) technician to ensure that it met current safety regulations and was properly installed.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children under 12 years of age.  This fatality rate could be reduced by half if appropriate safety seats were used and installed correctly.  Research has indicated that the target audience is overconfident regarding the safety of their children in the car.

Seventeen inspections were completed during the 3-hour event by certified CPS technicians from the Ridge Road Fire District, the Pittsford Fire Department, the North Greece Fire District, the Greece Police Department, and the Monroe County Office of Traffic Safety.  Of those seventeen car seats, six seats had to be replaced.  Parents and guardians received education about matching their child to a car seat based on age, weight and height and proper installation. All attendees were also entered into a raffle for a $100.00 ToysRUs gift card.
